Fellowships launched in memory of “grandfather” of independent schools’ admissions & marketing

AMCIS has honoured the memory of its past President, the late Peter Anwyl, by creating a new fellowship scheme in his name.

The Peter Anwyl Fellowships will honour AMCIS members who have made a significant contribution to admissions, marketing, or communications in the independent schools’ sector, as well as those who have played a significant role in AMCIS, the association for admissions, marketing & communications in independent schools.

The new fellowships were launched at this year’s AMCIS Annual Conference, less than a year after Peter’s death in October 2021. AMCIS ceo Tory Gillingham said:

“Peter Anwyl was Headmaster of the prep school at Stonyhurst College for many years and became their first marketing director. He was a founder member of AMCIS (known then as ADDIS) and our President for over 20 years.

“For those that didn’t know him, Peter was not a particularly tall man, but what he lacked in stature, he more than made up for in his passion for our sector. He was, quite literally, the grandfather of independent schools’ admissions and marketing, and his wisdom and knowledge – not to mention his wicked sense of humour – will be so greatly missed.

“In memory of such a man, AMCIS had to do something special. I am very proud and honoured to announce that Peter’s legacy will live on through our new initiative: the Peter Anwyl Fellowships.”

FIRST PETER ANWYL FELLOWS ANNOUNCED

AMCIS Chair, Oli Adams – also director of communications, admissions & development at Brentwood School – announced the first Peter Anwyl Fellows. They are: Hannah Hamilton, director of external relations at Stamford Schools, and Kirsty Hassan, former AMCIS Chair. He said:

“Hannah Hamilton has been tireless in her support of AMCIS and the independent schools’ sector in so many different ways. She has been

a mentor to fellow marketers and has provided advice and spoken at many events. And of course she has served on the AMCIS Board, where she played a significant role  in shaping the strategic direction of our association, for which we are deeply grateful.

“Kirsty has worked in a variety of schools in the independent sector. She has made a tremendous contribution by giving freely of her advice and expertise, in quiet conversations as well as in her more high-profile presentations.  It is for that, but perhaps most importantly, her role as AMCIS Chair during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, that we honour Kirsty tonight.  Despite a lack of in-person events, she worked diligently behind the scenes for her entire two-year tenure as Chair, providing invaluable support to not only the AMCIS team but also the entire AMCIS membership.”

Peter Anthony Anwyl was a former Headmaster at St Mary’s Hall, the prep school to Stonyhurst College, as well as a past English teacher and Common Room Master at Ratcliffe College. He died on 23 September 2021, aged 84 years. A Requiem Mass was held in his memory at St Peter’s, Stonyhurst, in October 2021.
