A unique & powerful community (CEO’s blog)

The definition of a community is a ‘dynamic entity where individuals feel a sense of belonging, actively participate, and work together to create a thriving environment for everyone.’

My first month with AMCIS reflects this definition and it’s an exciting place to be. I’ve spent time listening and learning, eager to understand what makes this community tick, to then understand how AMCIS can continue to support our schools to thrive. Undoubtedly there are many challenges facing the sector but in equal measure, be reassured, there are many success stories.

Kicking off with the AMCIS Annual Conference, quickly followed by four AMCIS Regional Networking Lunches, I have been in the fortunate position of meeting many passionate and inspiring members. For each challenge I’ve heard, there has been a success, demonstrating the power of networking. At each of the lunches I witnessed the powerful role AMCIS plays as a ‘convenor’, the go-to place for all things marketing, communications and admissions. Our thanks again to St Dunstan’s College, Marlborough College, Felsted School, St Peters School, and Solihull School for hosting in your stunning surroundings – these events will undoubtedly be a staple of our calendar.

What have I learned?

We are a passionate, inspiring and committed community, tackling head-on the challenges of a changing sector, and always with the best interests of children front of mind. Equally, in a competitive market place this community embraces the opportunities, overcomes the challenges and is open to sharing with others. This is unique and powerful.

What are the headlines?

Systems! Systems! Systems! There is a huge desire for efficient and effective CRMs that work cohesively and put a smile on your face, instead of a frown.

Genuine concern for colleagues across the sector, and a desire to support where you can in managing student recruitment shortfalls or high demand – your proverbial door is clearly always open for your peers!

Influence – the differing perception of marketing, communications, and admissions within schools. Some schools embrace the insight that colleagues in these roles can offer as part of the SLT, influencing decision making and being a voice for department colleagues. However, some schools are yet to adopt the same approach, which can contribute to disjointed appreciation of the role of marketing, communications, and admissions, and ultimately a lack of cohesion.

And VAT!!

I’m looking forward to continuing my learning and exploring how our AMCIS community can thrive together.
